A Negroni is a timeless cocktail hailing from Italy but sipped all over the globe. It’s an aperitif, meaning it’s usually enjoyed before a meal to tease your taste buds and spur your appetite.
Like most traditional aperitifs, a Negroni has a bitter dominant flavour, with just a hint of sweetness from the Sweet Vermouth. It’s a classic gin cocktail that’s hard to miss due to its seductive ruby red colour.
HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT NEGRONI
Making the perfect Negroni is easy. It’s a great cocktail for beginner mixologists to try because its equal ratio makes it simple to remember.
You’ll need equal parts of Beefeater London Dry Gin, Campari and Sweet Vermouth to make a classic Negroni, plus the classic garnish of an orange slice or twist. A Negroni’s ratio means each of its ingredients are pretty essential, but you can indeed switch out the Vermouth for a similar fortified wine, such as Sherry.
NEGRONI TOO BITTER? TRY THIS
The Negroni cocktail can be somewhat of an acquired taste due to its bitterness. Try swapping the Campari for Aperol, or play around with the ratios until you find your sweet spot. Vermouth is the sweetest ingredient in a Negroni, so more of that and less of the Campari will make for a sweeter drink.
Shaken or stirred? Well, this isn’t up for debate when it comes to making a Negroni. It’s one gin cocktail that must always be stirred, so put down that cocktail shaker and pick up the spoon! A Negroni doesn’t need to be shaked as its three key ingredients all have similar densities and can be combined well using a simple spoon.
MAKE ENOUGH FOR LATER: NEGRONI PITCHER
Hosting your friends and family? Making a Negroni pitcher can save you time and make sure everyone’s drink stays topped up.
While a traditional Negroni doesn’t contain any non-alcoholic mixers, you can add one when whipping up a big batch – something like a soda water or a subtle orange soda will work well to make a tasty Negroni Punch.
Or if you prefer to stick to tradition, simply use the original Gin, Campari and Vermouth ratio, but make more of it! Pick your favourite jug, grab some glasses and let everyone help themselves.
