Garnishes
Gone are the days when a simple wedge of lemon was the only garnish for a Gin and Tonic (though it’s still a great choice!). Nowadays, you’ll find bars offering all kinds of garnishes, from slices of grapefruit to sprigs of rosemary, or even cucumber for a refreshing twist.
When ordering your G&T, don’t be shy to ask for a garnish that complements your gin. For example, a citrusy gin might be paired with orange or lemon, while a more herbal gin could work well with thyme or basil.
We always recommend a Beefeater gin and tonic is served with a slice of orange and a slice of lemon. This combination perfectly complements the citrus botanicals we use- and is delicious.
Ice
It might seem like a small detail, but ice plays a big role in your G&T. Ideally, you want plenty of ice – it helps keep the drink cold without watering it down too quickly. Some bars will use larger ice cubes, which melt more slowly and keep your drink crisp. If you’ve got a preference, feel free to ask for extra ice or even request larger cubes if the bar has them.
Personal preferences
Did you know the type of glass your G&T is served in can affect the experience? Traditionally, Gin and Tonics are served in highball glasses, but some bars will opt for a large balloon glass (also called a copa glass), which enhances the aroma of the botanicals in the gin. Here at Beefeater Gin, we prefer a copa glass to really open up all those flavours.
And while it might be tempting to give your drink a good shake to mix it, it’s better to stir gently. Shaking can “bruise” the gin and make it taste harsher. If you like, you can even ask the bartender to give your G&T a gentle stir after it’s made to ensure everything is mixed just right.
How to say your order
When you’re ready to order your G&T, keep it simple and confident. Here’s how you can go about it:
- Start by naming the gin: “I’d like a Beefeater London Dry Gin, please.”
- Then, specify the tonic: “With regular tonic water.”
- Don’t forget your garnish: “And could I have a wedge of lime, please?”
- If you have a preference for ice or glassware, now’s the time to mention it: “Could you serve it in a highball glass with lots of ice?”
By the time you finish, you’ll have ordered a perfectly customised G&T that’s just right for your taste. And, if you want to keep it casual, you can simply say, “A G&T with Beefeater London Dry, please!” and let the bartender take it from there.
There’s something endlessly satisfying about a well-made Gin and Tonic. Whether you’re at your favourite cocktail bar or discovering a new gin joint, knowing how to order your G&T with all the right preferences will make your drink that much better. Remember, it’s all about balance, flavour, and a bit of fun, so don’t hesitate to experiment with different gins, tonics, and garnishes until you find your perfect mix.
