The best variations on a classic Gin and Tonic recipe

The G&T is as classic as it gets. Exceptional, natural botanicals served with light, bubbling fizz. Is there anything better?

 

Whilst you can’t beat our original Gin and Tonic recipe, we’ve found some fun ways to mix things up. You can easily put a spin on the classic G&T recipe (1:2 ratio) by playing with fruity, herbal or savoury additions like elderflower, cucumber and pink grapefruit. Plus a spritzer twist that turns the G&T from mixer to cocktail.

 

The simple pairing of Gin and Tonic means it’s super easy to make your own. So you really can’t go wrong. But if you’re after inspiration, here’s our favourite G&T variations to get you started. There’s enough to sip all year long.

GRAPEFRUIT GIN & TONIC

SPICY gin and tonic

We’ve given the G&T a fiery makeover, inspired by spicy margaritas. Our Spicy Gin and Tonic uses hot agave syrup to add a kick, and it’s garnished with a fresh chili pepper and lime wedge for extra boldness.

If you can’t find hot agave syrup, it’s easy enough to make your own. Just soak sugar syrup with a bright chili.

DIRTY gin and tonic

A Dirty Gin and Tonic is where crisp refreshment meets a savoury twist. Think of it as the love child of a classic G&T and a Dirty Martini; bright, bubbly, and just a little bit briny.

A splash of olive brine adds a subtle saltiness that enhances the botanicals in the gin, creating a drink that’s unexpectedly smooth, complex, and seriously moreish. Garnish with a few olives, and you’ve got a serve that’s perfect for those who like their cocktails with a little umami edge.

The Beefeater Black Gin and Tonic follows the classic G&T recipe but uses Beefeater Black to take the cocktail to new and exciting places.

Botanicals of lemon verbena and thyme make this cocktail surprisingly citrus-forward, but with a herby undertone that adds a subtle saltiness.

frozen gin and tonic

When the sun’s shining and the BBQs sizzling, there’s only one recipe you need. Meet the Frozen Gin and Tonic, or Ginita as we call it here at Beefeater. Super icy and super refreshing, this one is made for balmy days.

Grab your blender and blitz lemon juice, sugar syrup and London Dry Gin with plenty of ice. Then simply top with tonic water and serve with a citrus garnish. It doesn’t get much better than that.

GIN SPRITZ

Move over G&T, it’s time to spritz things up. This classic gin cocktail is a little bit more elevated, a lot more fizzy and just as easy to make your own. 

The classic Gin Spritz recipe mixes light and fruity Lillet Blanc with Beefeater 24 Gin for an enhanced grapefruit flavour. Plus a pour of your favourite fizzy liquid, be it Champagne, soda water or tonic. Garnish with a grapefruit slice and raspberries, and serve with plenty of ice.

For a refined twist on the classic G&T, the Sencha Tea Gin & Tonic combines Beefeater 24’s botanical complexity with the delicate sweetness of green tea syrup.

PINK GIN SPRITZ

The complex notes of our botanical flavoured premium gin are perfectly tasted with light tonic water. Whilst a grapefruit garnish heightens the drink’s tart taste.

ZESTY GIN & TONIC

G&T variations don’t have to be complicated. As is the case with this Gin and Tonic with lemon, a simple yet satisfying take on the original recipe.

You can make this recipe with both London Dry Gin, or our lemon flavoured gin for extra zest. Both pair wonderfully with Mediterranean-style tonic water for a light, fizzy finish. Garnish with a lemon wheel and sprig of lemon thyme to enhance the freshness.

OTHER WAYS TO MIX UP A GIN AND TONIC

There are so many ways to add your own variation to a Gin and Tonic:

  • The simplest is with different flavoured tonics; think elderflower, grapefruit or lemon
  • Add herbs and spices to your glass such as a star anise, cinnamon spiced G&T or cucumber G&T with a sprig of rosemary
  • Pour in floral elderflower liqueur, black tea, Angostura bitters or fruity syrups for extra flavour
  • Swap to tonic in other gin cocktail recipes like a Spagliato-nic that replaces the prosecco for tonic with equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth

EXPERT TIPS FOR MIXING A GIN AND TONIC

  • Glassware: Use a highball or Spanish-style copa glass to allow for plenty of ice and botanical aromas.
  • Ice: Use large ice cubes to minimise dilution.
  • Garnish: “Slap” fresh herbs (such as mint or rosemary) between your hands before adding to release oils.
