Gin vs tequila: what’s the difference?

Gin and tequila are two of the most popular spirits in the world, but they couldn’t be more different. One is all about juniper and botanicals, the other is rooted in agave and Mexican heritage.

Whether you’re a die-hard gin fan or curious about tequila, understanding how these two spirits compare can help you decide what to pour into your next cocktail. Let’s break it down.

WHAT ARE GIN AND TEQUILA?

Gin is a distilled spirit that gets its signature flavour from juniper berries and a mix of other botanicals. Originally created as a medicinal drink, it’s evolved into one of the most versatile spirits around, forming the base of countless classic cocktails.

Beefeater London Dry Gin, for example, follows the same traditional recipe that’s been used since the 1800s, with a perfectly balanced blend of citrus, spice, and juniper. Learn more about the ingredients in gin.

Tequila, on the other hand, is a spirit with deep Mexican roots, made exclusively from the blue agave plant. It’s produced in specific regions of Mexico, much like how Champagne can only come from Champagne, France. Depending on how it’s aged, tequila can range from bright and peppery to rich and oaky.

INGREDIENTS AND PRODUCTION

Gin starts with a neutral base spirit, usually made from grain, which is then infused with juniper and other botanicals. The choice of botanicals can vary, but common flavours include citrus peel, coriander, angelica root, and liquorice. These ingredients are then steeped in the spirit to create a balanced flavour profile.

Tequila, in contrast, comes from the blue agave plant. The heart of the plant, called the piña, is cooked to extract its natural sugars before being fermented and distilled. Tequila can be unaged (blanco), rested for a short period (reposado), or aged in barrels for a deeper, richer flavour (añejo).

HOW DO GIN AND TEQUILA TASTE?

The biggest difference between gin and tequila is their flavour. Gin is fresh, herbal, and citrusy, with the juniper always at the forefront. The specific taste depends on the botanicals used—some gins lean towards bright citrus notes, while others have a spicier, more floral character. Find out more about what gin tastes like.

Tequila is earthy and slightly sweet, with natural vegetal and peppery notes from the agave. Aged tequilas develop richer, caramel-like flavours from time spent in oak barrels, while blanco tequilas keep things crisp and peppery.

ALCOHOL CONTENT

Both spirits pack a punch, but their ABV (alcohol by volume) varies slightly.

  • Gin typically ranges from 37.5% to 50% ABV, depending on the brand and style. Beefeater London Dry, for example, sits at 40% ABV, making it a strong yet smooth option for cocktails.
  • Tequila usually falls between 35% and 55% ABV, though most bottles on the market sit around the 40% mark.

CLASSIC GIN AND TEQUILA COCKTAILS

Both spirits have a strong place in the cocktail world, but they shine in very different ways.

  • Paloma – A mix of tequila, grapefruit soda, and lime juice for a refreshing, citrusy serve.
  • Tequila Sunrise – A visually stunning blend of tequila, orange juice, and grenadine.

The verdict

Gin and tequila each bring something unique to the table, but when it comes to versatility, gin takes the crown. It mixes effortlessly with a range of ingredients, making it the perfect base for everything from a simple G&T to complex, flavour-packed cocktails. If you’re looking for a spirit that can do it all, gin is always a solid choice.
